The driver responsible for the death of a 17 year old Hillsborough High School student has been identified, and is in custody, after an insurance adjuster reported the person to the State Police.
According to authorities, 56 year old Nikolas Konstantinou struck and killed Ashley Perdomo Wednesday night as she was crossing Hillsborough Avenue. Instead of stopping and calling 911, the assailant immediately fled the scene of the accident. When Konstantinou arrived home in Clearwater, he called his insurance company and filed a claim to have his 2002 Hyundai repaired from the damage. Familiar with the story, the insurance adjuster that was overseeing the claim called authorities after noticing unique characteristics from the damage. Following the tip from an insurance adjuster, the Florida Highway Patrol located and arrested 56-year-old Nikolaos Konstantinou at his home on the charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
It should be noted that Perdomo was not in a crosswalk when the vehicle hit her. If convicted, Mr. Konstantinou is facing up to 30 years jail.
Ashley Perdomo is survived by her family and friends who paint a picture of an honors student that everyone enjoyed to be around. The Hillsborough High School Terriers will have a moment of silence to honor Ashley Perdomo before Friday’s home football game against Blake High School. Ashley’s brother, Bryant Perdomo is quoted as saying, ” Maybe she would’ve been alive if he would’ve stopped.”
