Statistics say Pokemon GO’s popularity has increased the number of reckless drivers on the road
By now you’ve heard all about the global phenomenon, smartphone application, Pokemon GO. In just a little over two months since the application’s launch, this Nintendo smartphone game already has more daily users than Twitter and players are spending more time with it than they do on Facebook.
Pokemon GO is an augmented reality game, which uses the navigation applications of a player’s smartphone and allows them to navigate local communities to find their favorite Pokémon and capture them. When players reach the location of their desired Pokémon, the game accesses their smartphone’s camera and projects the virtual beast into the real world. Instead of players sitting on the couch and playing the game in the comfort of their own home, Pokémon GO requires players to get up, go outside, and move around.
While it is certainly more beneficial to move around while playing a video game, this game has also proven to be very dangerous. Players are getting so engrossed in “Catchin’ Em All” that they are losing focus of their present surroundings and causing injuries to themselves and others. Some players are even attempting to hunt for Pokémon while driving, which has led to multiple car accidents in the U.S. alone.
Whether you are a Pokémon GO gamer yourself or just a bystander observing the craze, it is important to remember a few safety tips in order to avoid injuring yourself or others around you:
Be alert at all times
– It is easy to lose focus while on the hunt for Pokémon.
Know your surroundings
– With Pokémon roaming virtually everywhere it is easy to wander into unknown territory.
Do not play while driving
– There are already enough distractions on the roadways today causing accidents. We don’t need any more adding to it.
Keep away from restricted & private property
– Use your common sense when hunting Pokémon, as the game may take you to some interesting areas.
